The Great History

The church was built in 19s, between 1916 and 1949. It has a grand history. The church was inspired by a miracle said to have taken place in that canyon some hundreds of years earlier in 1754.

A woman named Maria Mueces was caught in a strong storm along with her daughter Rosa, who was deaf-mute. They took shelter between the lajas- a type of sedimentary rock, daughter, Rosa pointed to the rock face and cried out that the mestiza was calling her. After that, lightning illuminated an image of the Virgin Mary on the rock. Soon after that, a shrine was constructed in the honor of the miracle. Eventually, it was improved and connected by a bridge over the canyon in 18s. Since then a lot of restoration and improvement has taken place.

The Church architecture

The church is remarkable architecture. The back wall of the church itself is actually the rock face of the cliff behind, where it said Rosa had seen the virgin, Mary. It does look ancient and rocky.

The view

As the church rises around 350ft, the view around the church is remarkable too. There is this pretty waterfall across the gorge. A lot of stalls selling some holy things.

Time and cost

It takes one or two hours to explore the site, enjoying the view, and investigating the shrines and interior of the church. Also, you can enjoy nearby places and spend some more time. The entry to the church is free, there is a museum which has some entry fee if you wish to visit.

Ultimately it all depends on one’s interests and preferences. if you have time and an interest in history, religion or architecture, then this spectacular church is certainly worth visiting.
